Artificial urinary sphincter implant
The AMS 800 system is made up of three main components, an occlusive cuff, a pressure-regulating balloon and control pump. These components are connected by a system of tubes and are filled with a sterile solution. The cuff works in a similar way to a natural healthy sphincter, putting mild pressure on the urethra (urinary canal) to close it and keep the urine in the bladder.
When the patient feels the need to urinate he locates the control pump in the scrotum (next to the testicles under the skin) and pushes the pump twice. Then the urine is released and after about 2 minutes the sphincter closes automatically and the the flow stops.
